Reading the Step-by-Step Grid

Overview

The step-by-step grid is the main part of the Lessons Dashboard. It shows every lesson in your program as a row, with columns that break down learner performance at each step. Once you know how to read it, you can quickly spot which lessons and steps need attention.

The Lesson Name Column

Each row starts with the lesson name. Below the name, you will see the module the lesson belongs to. This helps you keep track of where each lesson fits within your program.

Select the three-dot menu on any lesson row to access two quick actions: Edit opens the lesson directly in the Lesson Builder, and Preview lets you view the lesson as a learner would see it.

Total Incorrect and Total Attempts

These two columns give you a summary of overall lesson performance.

  • Total Incorrect is the total number of incorrect actions recorded across all steps in the lesson.

  • Total Attempts is the total number of times learners have attempted the lesson.

Use these two numbers together to get a sense of how much activity a lesson has had and how many errors are occurring overall. A lesson with a high Total Incorrect and a high Total Attempts may simply have a large learner population, so the step-level data is what tells you whether there is a real content problem.

The Step Columns

Each step in the lesson gets its own column, starting with Step 1. The columns show either a percentage or a count of incorrect actions at that step, depending on your View As setting.

  • A colored cell means tap data was recorded at that step. The color tells you how serious the error rate is. Select any colored cell to open the Heatmap Viewer and see exactly where learners tapped on that screen.

  • 0 Actions means no incorrect taps were recorded at that step. This is common on steps that do not require a specific tap, such as informational screens or video steps.

  • "--" means that step does not exist in this lesson. Because lessons have different numbers of steps, not every column will apply to every row.

Sorting the Grid

You can sort the grid by any column by selecting the column header. This is useful when you want to rank lessons by Total Incorrect, Total Attempts, or the error rate at a specific step. Selecting the header a second time reverses the sort order.

How to Use This Data

Start by looking at Total Incorrect to identify lessons with the most errors overall. Then scan across the step columns to find which specific steps are driving those errors. Red cells with high percentages are your highest priority. Selecting a red cell opens the Heatmap Viewer so you can see exactly what is happening on that screen.

If a lesson shows mostly green with one or two red steps, the issue is likely isolated to specific content or instructions at those steps. If most steps are red, the lesson may need a broader review.

What's Next

When you find a step worth investigating, you can also review how it has performed across different published versions of the lesson. See Lesson Versions Dashboard for details.
