Article Overview
The Data Review tool allows instructional designers to safely sanitize screenshots before they are uploaded to Skyllful. Using browser-based Optical Character Recognition (OCR), the tool detects text on each screenshot and enables users to edit, mask, format, or bulk-replace sensitive information. Because all review and redaction occur locally in the browser, customers with strict data-handling requirements can ensure sensitive information is never transmitted to the server until it has been fully approved.
Why the Data Review Tools Matters
Until now, creating lessons with Replica Maker required uploading screenshots directly to Skyllful’s servers—even when they contained sensitive information. This made it difficult for customers with strict security requirements to use the tool, since unredacted screenshots could not be uploaded.
The Data Review Tool solves this by keeping screenshots local to the browser until they are reviewed and approved. Using browser-based OCR, it detects text and allows users to edit, mask, reformat, or bulk-replace sensitive content before anything reaches the server.
This protects customer data and centralizes redaction into one controlled workflow, combining OCR, extraction, find/replace tools, CSV configs, and human review to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Compliance ProtectionMeet regulatory requirements for HIPAA, GDPR, FERPA, and other data privacy frameworks by preventing unredacted PII from leaving your environment. | Removes Adoption BarriersOrganizations that previously couldn't use Replica Maker due to security policies can now confidently create training content. | Designer EmpowermentNo need for external graphics tools or specialized software. Designers can redact sensitive information directly within Skyllful Studio |
The review process happens entirely in browser memory—nothing is uploaded until the designer clicks Upload for each screen
Learning Program Settings That Control Masking
The Data Review Tool is activated via three independent toggles in Learning Program Settings:

How Screenshots Enter the Data Review Workflow
Screenshots flagged for review can enter the workflow in multiple ways:
| Drag-and-drop into Screen Library Dropping videos or screens into Replica Video Capture Uploading screens into Lesson Builder (dragging into a step or using the action bar upload button) |
When Data Review is enabled:
Screenshots are immediately labeled “Data review required.”
A review banner appears prompting the user to open the tool.
Troubleshooting Tips
Refreshing the browser discards all unreviewed work.
Uploads must be reviewed individually.
Screenshots are only routed to the masking workflow if they are uploaded after the Data Review setting has been turned on in the Learning Program.
