Article Overview

When designing a lesson, you will often want to preview how it is coming together.  You can quickly preview the lesson inside of Studio's Lesson Builder.  This will pull up a single mode, which will be isolated from all other content.  It is very helpful because you don't have to publish the lesson or move out of your design platform.  However, there is also great value in previewing a lesson in the actual learning environment.  To preview in Simulator, you need to publish your design and add it to an assignment.  You can then enter into Simulator and view the lesson - exactly as a learner will see it.

Previewing Content in Lesson Builder

Lessons do NOT have to be published or added to an assignment to preview them using Lesson Builder (Studio's design interface)

Previewing Content in Simulator

Lessons MUST BE PUBLISHED and added to an assignment before you can preview them using Simulator (the learner's interface)

2) Best Practices & Troubleshooting

Best Practices

  • To preview content in Simulator (the learner's interface), it is a best practice to first create an assignment that designers, stakeholders, and other parties involved in the curriculum development process can use to view the lessons.  This allows the content development team to experience the lesson without it being pushed live to any learner group.

Troubleshooting

  • If you cannot see your lesson in Simulator:
    • Check to make sure you published the lesson.
    • Check to make sure you have added the lesson to an assignment.
    • Check to make sure you have been added as a learner to the assignment.
  • If you click to preview a learning mode in Lesson Builder; but it doesn't work:
    • If it is stuck on a blank white screen, hit the browser refresh button.
    • If the Lesson Builder [Preview] button is grayed out, click the [Update] button.  Lessons must be saved before previewing.
    • If you click on a mode in the [Preview] drop down menu and you receive a notice that there are no steps to display - return to Lesson Builder and make sure you have the mode turned on for the lesson.  If a mode has been turned off using the individual step checkboxes, or the overflow menu, nothing will display during preview.
