Article Overview

In this lesson, you will learn how to design a walkthrough mode, how content maps from Lesson Builder into Simulator (the learning environment), and best practices for your design process.

  1. Preview a Walkthrough in Simulator (Learning Environment)
  2. General & Walkthrough Tabs--> Walkthrough Mode (Mapping)
  3. Best Practices

1) Preview a Walkthrough in Simulator

2) General & Walkthrough Tabs --> Walkthrough Mode (Mapping)

3) Best Practices

  • Establish your General Tab Controls prior to completing the Walkthrough tab's fields.  This helps ensure your workflow is complete and properly sequenced before you invest time creating a mode.
  • By using the Lesson Title as your Step Title - you will ensure a concise learning objective is present on every walkthrough screen - reinforcing both the purpose of the lesson and reminding the learner of their desired focus.
  • The content you put in the General Tab's description field will be displayed before the text you place in the Walkthrough tab's description field.  Think through the order in which you want to present context or instructions.
  • Adding a description in the Walkthrough tab's description field is not required if you have adequate information provided in the General tab's description field.
  • Consider a visual differentiator for action items.  These lessons not only function as initial training; but, also as resources while employees are performing their responsibilities.  Visually identifying guidance enables learners to quickly locate what they need when using the lesson as a resource.
  • Be careful when entering your expected value (when using a text entry control).  Text entry is case-sensitive.  You may want to mention that in your Walkthrough tab's description field.
  • If, when previewing content, you discover the textbox covers content you want the learner to see, try a new prompt attachment point (accessible from the Walkthrough tab).  by default, it is set to AUTO.  'Auto' placement is the most responsible attachment point since algorithms will determine the best placement based on dynamic screen sizes.
  • When previewing content in Simulator, if at all possible, use the same type of device a learner will be utilizing to complete training.  This helps you best visualize the learning environment.
  • If text entry is required, learners will not have to enter it during the workflow, since this is the mode that heavily relies on built-in supports.  Consider mentioning, in the Walkthrough tab's description field, that they need to remember the text for entry on subsequent modes.
