Article summary

Article Overview

In this article, you will learn how to create a practice mode in Lesson Builder.

  1. View a Practice Mode from the Learner's Lens
  2. Design the Practice Mode using the General & Practice Tabs
    • Includes a map that illustrates the relationship between Studio entries and where those entries display in the Learning Environment
  3. Auto Scroll Control
    • Use when multiple actions are performed in a single scroll screen and you notice it keeps jumping to the top on subsequent steps
  4. Best Practices

1) Preview Practice mode in Simulator

2) Design the Practice Mode using the General & Practice Tabs

Best practice is to use the general tab to enter context for a lesson.  What you enter into the general tab will be included in both the Walkthrough Guidance AND it will serve as the Hint when a learner makes a mistake in Practice Mode.  You can use the Walkthrough Description field and Practice Hint field only as needed, when you want to add phrasing to one of the modes, but not the other.

By this point, if you entered context into the General tab, all you need to do to finalize the Practice Mode is enter the [Expected Value] for steps requiring text entry.  Text entry is case specific.  You may want to consider setting multiple correct answers using Regex, ie:

  • If the expected text entry is 'false', accept:  False & false
  • If the expected text entry is 4000, accept:  4000 & 4,000

To get help with multiple correct answers, you can reference this article:  Regex

The graphic below illustrates how your entries in Studio will appear in the learning environment.

3) Auto Scroll Control

When learners have to perform multiple actions in a scroll area:  You may notice, as learners scroll down and click on a control, that the visible portion of the screen jumps back to the top of the scroll area instead of staying locked in the area the learner clicked.  This is because they have advanced to the next step and the next screen loads to the top.

  • Consider this:  You're on a website and you click on a link, the next screen will open to the top of the page and you have to scroll down.
  • Skyllful works the same way, clicking on a screen advances the learner to the next step and that screen will load to the top (even if it is a duplicate of the previous screen).

If you would prefer learner advances to the next step without 'jumping to top', you can set the next screen to lock in the position of your choosing.  These controls can be found in the Practice tab AND in the Knowledge Check tab.  It is called Auto Scroll Control.

4) Best Practices

  • The hint you place in the Practice tab will appear after the learner makes their 2nd mistake on the screen.  You can choose to customize this by entering a hint, or you can choose to leave it blank.  If left blank, the General tab's description field text will be displayed.  If you want to save development time, create concise and informative descriptions on the general tab.
  • When text entry is required, you may want to include a reminder that text entry is 'case sensitive' in your hints.
  • If workflows are lengthy, consider placing instructional screens at benchmark locations throughout the workflow.  on those screens, you can provide instructions in 'chunks' instead of expecting learners to remember long workflows.  Don't forget to turn these screens off for modes you don't want them to appear (such as the walkthrough or knowledge check).
  • If, even after receiving the hint provided, the learner performs a 3rd incorrect action, the interaction area will be highlighted, the General tab's description will be displayed, and the Practice tab's hint will be displayed.  Think through the order this will be presented.
  • Preview Practice mode and make sure there are adequate distractor click areas (if you only create a button over the desired click region, learners will not need to think for themselves).
  • Preview Practice mode and make mistakes so you can experience the mode authentically and create efficient and effective learning experiences.
